Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Use of Masks Information

The rules regarding the use of personal protective equipment and the use of masks come from a number of bodies. These include the Ministry of Health, Public Health Ontario, and municipal by-laws.

The College of Physiotherapists does not set the rules related to personal protective equipment and masking but is happy to direct you to the authoritative sources to assist you in answering your questions.

Directive #5 for Hospitals, Long-Term Care and Retirement Homes

Effective December 22, 2021, The Chief Medical Officer of Health issued an updated version of Directive #5 that applies to public hospitals, long-term care homes and retirement homes. The amendments aim to enhance required health and safety precautions in these settings in order to reduce the risks to patients and regulated health professionals/health care workers associated with this wave of COVID-19.

Directive #5 has been revised with an interim recommendation for additional PPE requirements:

As an interim precaution in light of the uncertainty of the Omicron variant, all health care workers providing direct care to or interacting with suspected, probably or confirmed cases of COVID-19 are required to have and use the following PPE:

  • Fit-tested, seal-checked N95 respirator (or equivalent);
  • Eye Protection (goggles or face shield);
  • Gloves;
  • Appropriate Isolation Gowns.

Non-Medical Masks for Patient and Visitor Use

  • No specific design or material is known to be better than others
  • Each cloth mask should have at least two layers and the ability to be washed multiple times without losing shape or deteriorating
